Rural Water Management Solutions Kenya has developed Lukenya Water Services (https://goo.gl/maps/oWzAnZjzzS216G9S9), a model fully automated water supply mini-grid providing 24 hrs quality water services through water bowsers, water Kiosk ATM & home connections with pre-paid smart meters.
Lukenya Water Services is located in a rapidly growing peri-urban estate – the InterCounty Estate – at the border of Nairobi and Machakos counties, 40 mins drive from the Nairobi CBD, along the Nairobi Mombasa super highway. Notable neighboring landmarks are the Daystar University, The Lukenya Getaway Hotel and the Lukenya hills. The InterCounty Estate comprises a middle-class population, with modern houses sitting on an eighth-acre to half- acre plots of land. Other amenities include private academies, restaurants, churches and a shopping centre.
The challenge: The area is a new settlement and as common with other peri-urban areas in Kenya, lacks basic amenities and infrastructure like municipal water supply and sewerage services. Before Lukenya Water Services, residents relied on water trucks/bowsers and besides the quality of water not known, were charged exorbitantly expensive and would be lucky to be delivered within a day after request.
The opportunity: The Lukenya Water Services is a mini-grid system comprising two interconnected boreholes, installed with a solar powered hybrid system, 80,000 litre capacity storage tanks, 1No. water kiosk ATM, pipeline augmentation, pre-paid metered home connections and a water vending point. To assure quality to our customers, a water purification system (UF) has been installed complete with a chlorine dosing unit.
Impact: The water enterprise is fully operational and the below outcomes have been achieved leading to great social impact:
