Ikungu Borehole Water Project

About the Project

Established in 2017 by the County Government of Makueni, Ikungu Borehole Water Project (https://maps.app.goo.gl/Y4gKpXgX99qCakHCA) is located in Kyale Sub-location, Makindu Ward, Kibwezi West Subcounty, Makueni County.

The water scheme comprises:

  • One borehole 150m depth
  • A solar-powered pumping system
  • Approximately 12 km of distribution pipeline network
  • Water storage tanks with a combined capacity of 400,000 litres
  • 14 water kiosks

Since establishment, the project has been managed by a Self-Help Group (SHG) through a water management committee, however the project has been dysfunctional since August 2025 due to mismanagement by the water committee.

Through a PPP/Management contract the project will be handed over to Rural Water Management Solutions Kenya to rehabilitate and provide professional management for a period of 10 years.
